HOLYOKE, MA (NOVEMBER 30, 2020) – The South Hadley Girls Treatment Program, a program of Robert F. Kennedy Children’s Action Corps , has received a mini-grant from the Seed to Flower Fund for Yoga Service of the Community Foundation of Western Massachusetts. The Fund is supported by Studio class fees from Breathing Space Yoga & Mindfulness Studio in Holyoke, by donations, and by fundraisers. This independent grant program supports yoga teachers to teach yoga in jails and addiction recovery facilities. This grant will support yoga teacher Angelica Lopez, who offers yoga at the Program online during the pandemic.
The Seed to Flower Fund of the Community Foundation of Western Massachusetts is intended to meet the demand for trauma-informed, recovery yoga classes in Western Mass. Yoga practice has been shown to relieve stress, chronic pain, anxiety, and depression, and to promote empathy, reduce reactivity, and support emotional stability. These benefits have led mental health professionals to include yoga classes as a support for their therapeutic objectives. Yoga teachers in the area have volunteered their time to lead yoga classes in these settings for years, but the demand for volunteers has always outstripped the supply. This is why the Seed to Flower Fund was founded in 2019.
The South Hadley Girls Treatment Program, a program of Robert F. Kennedy Children’s Action Corps (www.rfkchildren.org), provides young women between the ages of 13 – 18 with educational, life skills, therapeutic, recreational, and support services. Residents attend high school classes or GED courses and participate in a curriculum designed to impart new life skills to enable them to make healthier choices when re-entering their communities.
Breathing Space Yoga & Mindfulness Studio (breathingspaceholyoke.com, a 501c3 nonprofit) is dedicated to bringing low-cost, accessible, body-positive yoga and mindfulness classes and programs to Holyoke and surrounding communities. Our mission centers on offering trauma-informed recovery yoga classes in jails and addiction recovery centers in Western Massachusetts.
